Accessibility is no longer a checkbox. As user bases diversify and regulation tightens, companies are building senior accessibility functions to set standards across product lines. Accessibility leads typically own design systems accessibility, QA workflows, and training programs, ensuring accessibility is baked into the product lifecycle.
Compensation for these roles ranges widely. At product-first, consumer-facing companies, leads command top market rates due to the direct business impact, whereas organizations newer to accessibility may offer midrange pay but sweeter mission-driven benefits. Employers increasingly include accessibility KPIs in leadership compensation to reflect the strategic importance.
Hiring managers report a talent bottleneck: many organizations desire senior accessibility expertise but compete for the same limited candidate pool. To address that, some companies invest in internal upskilling programs that promote experienced designers into accessibility leadership over 12 to 18 months.
