Accessibility-First Redesign for a Mobile Bank: Reduced Errors and Faster Support Resolution
Design · 5 min read
LumenBank set a company goal in 2026 to be WCAG 2.1 AA compliant and to reduce friction for older adults and users with assistive needs. A usability audit uncovered frequent form validation misunderstandings, poor color contrast in status badges, and a lack of keyboard/voice navigation paths. Designers prioritized fixes that impacted critical flows first: sign-up, payments, and dispute filing.
The redesign introduced inline, human-readable validation messages, larger hit targets, high-contrast state colors, and an optional 'guided mode' that simplified screens into step-by-step actions with voice prompts. They also added semantic landmarks and ARIA roles to improve compatibility with screen readers. The team partnered with accessibility consultants and ran remote moderated tests with 30 participants representing diverse abilities.
Results included a 38% reduction in form abandonment rates, a 27% decrease in phone support calls for payment errors, and a 20% faster resolution time on disputes due to clearer evidence collection flows. Customer satisfaction scores among older demographics increased significantly. The project exemplifies that accessibility investments not only meet ethical and regulatory goals but also improve broad product usability and business metrics.
