Recruiters say many tasks previously used to train junior designers are now performed by AI, reducing the number of apprenticeship-style openings.

At the same time, product teams are creating mid-level specialist roles focused on prompt engineering for design systems, governance of AI outputs, and strategic tooling integration. These positions require a mix of UX craft, systems thinking, and operational experience — skills that companies prefer over pure visual or interaction craft for new hires.

Design leaders recommend that early-career designers focus on mastering collaborator-facing skills like research synthesis, stakeholder communication, and tooling orchestration to remain employable. For hiring teams, the main challenge is designing interview loops that assess strategic judgment and AI-augmented workflows rather than pure execution speed.
