AI-first UX: NovaWrite Moves AI Controls Out of the Editor and Into a Sidecar

NovaWrite, a collaborative writing app with integrated generative AI, discovered that users were confused by inline AI buttons embedded directly in the text toolbar. User interviews revealed two issues: interruptions to writing flow and difficulty reusing prompts across documents. NovaWrite redesigned the interaction by introducing an always-available AI sidecar panel where users could craft, save, and audit prompts.

The sidecar supports versioned prompts, role presets, and a small history list so users can apply the same prompt across multiple documents. Designers used task modeling to ensure the editor canvas remained distraction-free, while the sidecar handled derivative work—summaries, rewrites, and citations. The team used feature flagging to roll the sidecar out gradually and tracked engagement with Mixpanel.

Within six weeks, the sidecar showed a 46% increase in prompt reuse and a 21% reduction in user-reported interruptions during focused writing sessions. The change also made it easier to expose explainability features—users can now see what prompt produced which suggestion—an important governance win for enterprise customers.
