Airbnb Experiences Rework: Designing for Local Discovery

Airbnb reframed Experiences to make local activities feel as discoverable as listings. The redesign emphasizes micro-hosting—small-group, neighborhood-focused activities—using rich microcopy, host bios, and real-time availability calendars. Visual storytelling (short clips, carousel highlights) helps convey atmosphere that photos alone couldn’t capture.

Trust signals are central: curated reviews, host verification badges, and safety notes are surfaced early in the booking flow. The platform also improved contingency UX by offering transparent cancellation policies, live communication channels pre-experience, and easy refunds. These reduce reservation anxiety for both hosts and guests.

For designers, the Experience pivot highlights the need to stitch discovery, logistics, and trust into a single flow. Provide creators with lightweight templates and operational tooling while ensuring guests get clear previews and safety information, thereby reducing friction for spontaneous bookings.
