Apple announced a selective developer program for AirFold, an experimental foldable tablet form factor that the company says emphasizes seamless continuity between single- and dual-pane experiences. The program gives developers early access to adaptive layout APIs, new gestures and a compact multitasking model designed specifically for hinged displays.

Initial previews focus on handling continuity between small and large app states, preserving window positions across folds, and developer tooling for fluid transitions. Participants will also receive a physical prototype under strict NDA to test real-world ergonomics and hinge behavior across typical workflows.

Apple framed the move as proactive developer engagement to avoid the app fragmentation that plagued earlier foldable launches in the mobile market. While Apple did not commit to a consumer release date, sources say the company wants to validate interaction patterns before scaling manufacturing.
