Android's latest release brings on-device Gemini powers to Play Store discovery

The Play Store's new discovery layer runs compact Gemini variants on-device to analyze user behavior signals and app interactions, surfacing tailored collections and short-form app demos without sending behavioral logs to servers. The system also supports local languages and frequently-used input modalities to better match local tastes.
Google said the approach improves latency and privacy, and will be opt-in by default for users in supported regions. Developers can opt into new discovery slots by tagging apps with contextual metadata and submitting short-form demo assets that are cached on-device.
Early A/B tests reported higher conversion rates for contextual collections like health tools for wearables and productivity utilities for tablets, though Google emphasized the Play Store will continue to blend server-side and on-device signals to maintain freshness and safety.
