App Store introduces subscription families and cross‑platform trial APIs
Tech · 4 min read
Apple's latest App Store update adds family subscription bundles that let developers offer a single subscription that unlocks content for multiple family accounts. The feature includes family-sharing management UI in App Store Connect and client-side APIs to check entitlement maps per family member.
In addition, Apple launched cross‑platform trial APIs that allow developers to orchestrate a consistent trial experience across iOS, macOS, web and smart TV clients. The APIs provide server validation tokens and standardized trial metering so a user's trial consumption on one device updates entitlement state everywhere.
The changes were designed to reduce developer complexity around trial fragmentation and to encourage broader use of family plans. Apple also updated its guidelines to clarify refund rules and to require clear disclosure of how trials behave between platforms.
