Apple announces MLKit 3 with on-device design assistants for iPadOS

MLKit 3 includes compact vision-language models optimized for Apple silicon that run entirely on-device in real time. Tools include a sketch refinement model that turns rough strokes into crisp vector shapes, a color harmonizer that proposes accessible palettes, and a layout adapter that suggests responsive reflows for iPad and iPhone.

Apple also added APIs for secure model fine-tuning with local datasets, enabling studios to personalize assistants without sending assets to the cloud. Performance and battery life optimizations were a major focus, according to Apple engineers.

Apple invited third-party design app developers to adopt MLKit 3 in their apps and promised a curated gallery of starter models in the App Store to help smaller teams ship faster. The company framed these additions as empowering professional workflows while maintaining data privacy.
