Apple introduces Live Collaboration APIs for iWork and third-party apps
Design · 4 min read
Apple's new Live Collaboration APIs provide a standardized framework for document synchronization across devices and users. The APIs expose CRDT-based conflict resolution, automatic offline buffering, and selective sync so apps can limit what data is shared in collaboration sessions.
Built-in end-to-end encryption options let developers choose per-document encryption keys that never leave user devices. Apple is offering sample server templates and a cloud relay service for low-latency session brokering, though direct peer-to-peer connections are supported when network conditions allow.
Designers and productivity apps will benefit from integrated presence indicators, live cursors, and version histories that are accessible from the iWork suite and via new system-level UI affordances. Apple says the API will ship in a developer beta later this month with SDK docs and migration guides.
