Apple launches iOS 20 beta with system-level generative shortcuts

Apple’s iOS 20 developer beta, released to registered developers today, introduces system-level generative shortcuts that allow apps to call on-device models for text and image synthesis without shipping heavy model artifacts in-app.

The new APIs sit under Shortcuts and UIKit, letting developers expose generative prompts as first-class actions users can combine into automated flows. Apple emphasizes that the models run in a sandboxed Secure Enclave environment with on-device inference where possible, and fall back to encrypted cloud execution only when necessary.

Designers will find new Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) updates in the beta, covering consent flows for content generation, affordances for prompt editing, and accessibility considerations for generative content. Early feedback from developers points to strong emphasis on user control and transparent model provenance.
