Apple Music Spatial Audio Onboarding: Design Teardown

Apple Music surfaces Spatial Audio through curated playlists, badges, and an onboarding nudge when users first encounter compatible tracks. The ecosystem approach—tying hardware (AirPods Pro/Max) to software discovery—creates a high-quality reveal, but it also makes Spatial Audio feel gated to those without the latest devices.

Labels and badges are conservative: 'Dolby Atmos' and 'Spatial Audio' tags appear intermittently in lists but are inconsistently explained. Users must often play a track to experience the effect, which reduces discoverability in noisy environments where auditioning is inconvenient.

Improving education could include inline micro-demos, a 'try without hardware' experience via simulated binaural preview, and clearer labeling in playlists. These would broaden adoption by lowering the friction to understand and try Spatial Audio without hardware gating.
