Apple opens VisionOS SDK 2.4 with spatial compositing and haptics API

Apple's VisionOS 2.4 SDK brings more precise spatial compositing tools that allow layered AR content to interact more realistically with real-world lighting and occlusion. The compositor supports per-layer reflectance and soft-shadowing, making virtual objects appear anchored under more complex lighting conditions.

Alongside visual upgrades, Apple introduced a unified haptics API for Vision hardware and paired iPhone devices. The API abstracts tactile feedback into 'gesture textures' that can be authored in Swift and scaled across devices, including localized fingertip feedback for hand-tracking interactions.

Developers also get better cross-device continuity controls: session handoff now preserves spatial anchors and active UX states when shifting from Vision to iPhone or Mac. Apple encouraged developers to test performance on M-series Vision processors and provided new profiling instruments in Xcode to visualize spatial resource usage.
