Apple updates App Store policies to simplify trialing paywalled AI features
Tech · 3 min read
Apple published a policy update that refines how developers should present and price AI-driven features. Apps that gate generative or compute-heavy features behind subscriptions must now offer a clear trial path and disclose whether processing occurs on-device or in the cloud. The update also standardizes labels for AI content to make user consent explicit before data is used for model training.
The App Review team will spot-check a sample of model outputs for moderation and safety, but Apple clarified that deterministic, non-content-generative tools (like on-device summarizers) generally don’t require the same level of scrutiny. Developers must still provide human-review callbacks and abuse reporting flows for public-facing generative features.
Financial terms were left unchanged, but Apple emphasized compliance with local AI regulations and requested transparency about training data sources. The company plans to roll out tooling in App Store Connect to help developers create AI feature pages with examples and safety documentation.
Designers should prepare clear onboarding and consent flows, while product teams need to audit data pipelines to align with Apple's disclosure requirements. The policy aims to reduce uncertainty for AI startups building on iOS while maintaining user safety and privacy standards.
