Aurora Interactive launches Nebula Engine: GPU-agnostic real-time lighting for indies

Aurora Interactive's Nebula Engine emphasizes GPU-agnostic real-time lighting with a scalable ray-tracing fall-back and a novel temporal sampling algorithm. The engine is optimized for small teams and supports a plug-in architecture for custom shaders and content pipelines.

Nebula’s selling point is consistent visuals across platforms: developers can author lighting once and let the engine adapt quality settings automatically to deliver similar visual intent on consoles, laptops, and mobile GPUs. Aurora also included a streaming asset pipeline to reduce initial download sizes and enable rapid content updates.

Early access is available to studios with fewer than 100 developers, and Aurora is offering fixed-cost licensing to limit unpredictable royalty structures. The company expects to add integrated performance profiling tools and a collaboration portal in the next quarter.
