Before & After: How a Mental Health App Reduced Cognitive Load with Visual Hierarchy and Microcopy

The app’s original UI presented too many therapeutic options, long paragraphs of explanatory text, and a dense grid of modules. Users reported feeling overwhelmed and often abandoned the app after the first session. UX research paired heatmaps with diary studies to identify where users hesitated and which language increased dropout.

The redesign prioritized three changes: compressing long explanatory text into bite-sized, user-directed prompts; a clearer visual hierarchy so the most therapeutic action stood out; and progressive onboarding that unlocked advanced features only after baseline habits were formed. Microcopy shifted from clinical language to action-oriented, empathetic prompts like “Try this two-minute breathing pause” instead of “Regulate your autonomic nervous system.”

Designers also introduced a modular activity card that summarized expected time, benefit, and required effort, allowing users to choose actions that fit their context. The result was a 38% increase in daily check-ins and stronger retention at days 7 and 30. Qualitative feedback highlighted that users felt less judged and more likely to return because choices felt clearer and easier to complete.

This case shows that for sensitive products, reducing cognitive overhead and adopting tone that matches user context can be as powerful as new features in driving engagement.
