Before & After: Reworking an Investor Dashboard for Faster Insights

The pre-redesign dashboard overload shocked even financial-savvy users: dense tables, dropdowns for every filter, and multiple modals to export data. Investors complained about the time it took to prepare quick portfolio checks. The core problem was information architecture that treated the dashboard like a data dump rather than a decision support tool.

Designers started by identifying the three most common investor jobs — portfolio health check, attribution explainers, and export-ready reports — and redesigned the main page to present those as tabs, with a compact top-line summary card, trend sparkline, and a “why this changed” contextual panel that surfaced top drivers in plain language. Filters became a lightweight persistent bar, and CSV export was reduced to a single click with smart defaults.

After two sprint cycles, the average report-prep time dropped from 48 minutes to 12, and user satisfaction scores for the dashboard rose by 0.8 on a 5-point scale in follow-up interviews. The project reinforced that dashboards must be structured around user decisions, not simply access to data, especially in resource-constrained startups.
