Before and after: Voxly slashes onboarding from 18 screens to 4 and boosts retention

Voxly's original onboarding, built during hypergrowth in 2024, pushed feature tours, microphone permissions, interest selection, and an invitation flow across 18 distinct screens. Data showed heavy drop-off during the permissions and interest-selection steps, and new users reported feeling overwhelmed by choices.

The design team adopted a minimal-first approach: reduce upfront friction by deferring microphone permission until the first recording, collapse interest selection into one quick swipe, and replace static screens with contextual tooltips that appear only when features are first used. The new flow was prototyped in Figma and rolled out behind a feature flag.

Quantitative measurement used a cohort analysis in Amplitude and session replay checks in FullStory. The 7-day retention rate rose 14 percent for the redesigned cohort and first-week churn fell by 22 percent. Users who deferred permissions but later engaged with the recording feature converted to creators at a 3x higher rate than those who granted mic access immediately but didn’t record.

Voxly's conclusion: onboarding should earn permissions and explain value at the moment of need. The team now maintains a permissions map and writes microcopy focused on context-driven value propositions, balancing growth goals with privacy considerations.
