Before/After: Consolidating KPIs in NovaBI's Enterprise Dashboard Cuts Cognitive Load
Design · 8 min read
Large customers complained that NovaBI's dashboard showed too many visualizations at once, forcing analysts to hunt across modules for the metrics they actually needed. Usability testing showed customers relied on three core KPIs per role, while the rest were nice-to-have. The product team decided to make those role-specific KPIs the default experience and shift secondary charts into contextual drill-ins.
Designers introduced role-based landing pages, a goal-driven wizard for initial setup, and a compact summary strip that surfaced anomaly alerts and next-step recommendations. They also redesigned chart density with progressive disclosure—overview tiles with sparklines that expand into full visualizations only when needed. Interaction patterns included quick compare shortcuts and ephemeral bookmarks to preserve ad-hoc investigative paths.
After rollout, average time to complete common analyst tasks fell by 42% and internal NPS among enterprise teams rose by 11 points. Customers reported faster onboarding for new hires and better cross-team alignment because stakeholders shared the same default views. NovaBI’s product lead called the project a reminder that dashboards often succeed by omission—show less by default and let users opt into depth when it matters.
