Before/After: Enterprise Analytics Dashboard Redesign That Cut Cognitive Load
Design · 7 min read
The original analytics workspace attempted to serve every persona on a single canvas: cluttered charts, dense tables, and a sprawling filter panel. Users reported paralysis by options. The product team chose to create role-specific default layouts: an 'Executive Snapshot' for high-level KPIs and an 'Analyst Workspace' that defaulted to a single analysis task with contextual tools.
Key design moves included reducing simultaneous visual channels, introducing inline tooltips with examples of how to interpret charts, and a contextual filter rail that surfaced only relevant dimensions based on the current dataset. The team also added a template library to help teams create repeatable, shareable views.
After the rollout, customer support tickets about dashboard complexity dropped 46%, time-to-insight for analysts improved by 28%, and NPS for power users increased. The team credits success to aligning UI complexity with user goals rather than trying to make every feature visible to every user at once.
