Before/After: Fintech Onboarding Cut Time to First Deposit by 60%

Before the redesign the onboarding flow spanned ten screens: email confirmation, full KYC form, manual ID upload, selfie verification, bank linking via micro-deposits, and multiple confirmations. Usability testing showed users stalled on the ID upload step and dropped out during bank verification. The product team prioritized minimizing visible complexity to reach “first value”—a funded account—faster.

The new flow consolidated verification onto three screens, used OCR for ID capture with client-side image guidance, and deferred optional profile questions until after deposit. Bank linking switched to OAuth-style instant connections where available, and micro-deposits were used only as fallback. The UI used inline field validation, clear progress indicators, and contextual microcopy to explain why each piece of information was required for compliance.

Outcomes were significant: median time-to-first-deposit fell from 8 minutes to 3.2 minutes, deposit completion rates increased 42%, and onboarding NPS climbed 11 points. The team noted trade-offs—reducing friction increased early revenue but required closer monitoring of fraud and chargebacks, which they mitigated with backend risk scoring and a phased KYC escalation for higher balances.
