Before/After: How a Mobile RPG Reworked Its Energy System UI to Improve Retention

Players were abandoning the game after a few sessions because the energy mechanic felt punitive: unclear costs, buried timers, and opaque monetization prompts. The old UI showed raw numbers and a single “Buy Energy” CTA that triggered frustration when used repeatedly. The design goal wasn't to remove monetization but to make the resource economy feel fair and transparent so players would keep coming back.
The redesign introduced contextual cost estimates (showing how much energy typical activities require), visible refill timers with local notifications, and a soft gating pattern that offered multiple non-paid ways to recover energy (watch an ad, complete a short quest, or wait). The buy flow was reworked to show value bundles and a clear comparison (how many battles each bundle currently enables) rather than a single price point. They also applied progressive monetization nudges, increasing visibility only after the player hit a natural stopping point.
A two-week A/B test produced a 9% lift in day-1 retention and a 16% lift in day-7 retention for the redesigned cohort, with a slight initial dip in one-time purchases offset by higher long-term engagement and an increase in subscription conversions. The study demonstrates that clarity and perceived fairness in resource systems can improve retention without necessarily sacrificing monetization when the economic model is presented transparently.
