Before/After: Rebooting a fintech dashboard to improve tax and cashflow clarity
Design · 6 min read
The original dashboard packed revenue, expenses, invoices, tax estimates, and actionable tasks into dense cards that many small-business users described as “overwhelming.” Analytics showed heavy scrolling, poor discoverability of upcoming liabilities, and repeated support queries about tax deadlines. The design team chose to reduce density and surface temporal cues.
In the after design, the top fold anchors a single “next due” module that consolidates runway, nearest tax dates, and critical invoices, followed by an adaptive list of three prioritized actions. Secondary data moved behind a context-sensitive drilldown and a left rail that persisted only on larger screens. The team used bold typography and motion to orient attention rather than color alone.
Testing with 60 customers over two weeks revealed a 32% reduction in time to find tax deadline information and a 19% drop in “where do I pay this?” support tickets. The redesign also increased users’ completion of recommended tax planning actions by 14%, attributed to clearer affordances and smaller microtasks. The case reinforces that simplifying the first decision moment often yields disproportionate ROI.
