Before/After: Redesigning a SaaS Analytics Dashboard for Customer Success Managers
Tech · 6 min read
The original dashboard presented a dense matrix of KPIs and configuration toggles that reflected the product’s feature set rather than the day-to-day work of customer success managers (CSMs). Usability testing revealed CSMs spent 60% of their first five minutes hunting for the one metric they needed for a renewal conversation.
The redesign began with job-mapping sessions and shadowing: the team identified three core jobs (health check, risk triage, and executive snapshot) and created dedicated views for each. The new home screen surfaces a prioritized ‘Today’ panel with top actions, an at-a-glance risk bar, and one-click deep links to the relevant customer timeline.
Interaction improvements included inline drilldowns instead of modal-heavy flows, fewer global filters, and a compact timeline that summarized anomalies with suggested next steps. After rollout, first-time-to-action (finding the needed metric) dropped by 67% and NPS among CSMs improved by 12 points. The case underscores the value of designing for jobs, not features.
