Before/After: Reimagining a B2B Analytics Dashboard to Cut Cognitive Load in Half

The original dashboard presented every metric and filter at once; power users loved the flexibility but new users were overwhelmed. Heatmaps and session replays showed frequent context-switching and long hover times over metric labels. The redesign focused on progressive disclosure: defaulting to a single, high-signal overview and letting users reveal deeper analyses when needed.

Key changes included a summary ribbon with three KPI tiles, contextual drill paths (click a tile to open a focused analysis panel), and persistent “save view” affordances. Filters moved from the top bar into a slide-over contextual filter panel that reflected the current analysis scope rather than global state. Microcopy explained default choices and surfaced examples of saved views used by similar companies.

After rolling out to a beta cohort, the team reported a 47% decrease in time-to-insight for novice users and a 9% increase in power-user satisfaction due to faster access to saved views. The trade-off was a small increase in support tickets for users who relied on previous global filters — a gap the team closed by introducing a “legacy mode” toggle while they iterated on discoverability.
