Before/After: Reimagining Checkout for a Direct-to-Consumer Brand

The original checkout page was a single scroll with many optional upsells and legal copy that created decision fatigue. Session recordings showed users hesitated near shipping options and coupon fields, and surveys cited uncertainty about returns and delivery timing as reasons for abandonment.

The redesign broke checkout into three focused steps: order review, delivery & timing with explicit guarantees, and final payment. The team moved reassurance elements (return policy, delivery ETA examples, customer photos) prominently into the delivery step and introduced a dynamic add-on module that suggested complementary items based on cart contents, with one-tap add.

After launching, abandonment at the shipping step dropped 31%, and average order value increased 8% as the contextual add-ons converted well without interrupting checkout flow. The case highlights how temporal structuring and trust-first content placement can convert hesitant buyers while preserving upsell opportunities.
