Before/After: Reimagining Checkouts for MicroSubscriptions at Streamly
Tech · 4 min read
The original checkout for Streamly mixed single purchases and add-on micro-subscriptions in the same cart UI, creating decision paralysis and high abandonment. UX research showed users hesitated when faced with multiple pricing models and an overloaded cart summary. Heatmaps revealed users ignored most cross-sell modules and abandoned at the payment step when required to re-enter saved card details.
Designers split the flows into a quick 'Subscribe Now' modal for micro-subscriptions and a full cart for bundled purchases. Micro-sub flows used a one-click consent pattern with contextual tooltips that explained billing cadence and cancellation. Visual hierarchy was simplified: price, primary benefit, and a single CTA, with cross-sell deferred to a post-purchase state.
A/B testing over four weeks produced an 18% uplift in micro-subscription conversion and a 9% increase in Average Revenue Per User for customers who used the new flow. Implementation required close coordination with payments (Stripe) to support tokenized charges and a feature-flag rollout to segment traffic. The outcome demonstrates how strict scope and focused UX reduce cognitive load and improve monetization.
