Before/After: Reimagining FitPlay's Mobile HUD to Improve Retention in Long Sessions
Gaming · 4 min read
FitPlay, a mobile fitness-gamification app, collected feedback that its in-session HUD was too dense, causing users to lose focus during workouts. Designers mapped the player journey and created attention heatmaps, revealing frequent accidental taps and long looks at low-value elements like decorative icons.
The redesign introduced contextual layering: only core metrics (time, heart rate, goal progress) remain persistently visible; secondary controls appear on demand; actionable nudges are timed to natural pauses. Motion and contrast changes reduce accidental input, and a compact summary appears between sets to preserve flow without interrupting exercises.
After rolling out the redesign to a progressive cohort, average session length increased by 14% for sessions over 20 minutes, and long-session churn dropped 9%. Qualitative feedback highlighted reduced fatigue and clearer pacing, showing that well-scoped HUD simplification can significantly improve retention in long-form mobile experiences.
