Before/After: Reworking a Marketplace Checkout That Lost Sellers

Originally the seller flow showed fees and payout estimates only after the final confirmation screen, which led to frustration when sellers discovered unexpectedly low payouts. Interviews revealed sellers felt ambushed and feared fee complexity was hiding poor economics.

The redesign surfaced transparent fee breakdowns earlier, added a dynamic seller payout preview, and introduced microcopy explaining timing and dispute policies. The UI also included an affordance to compare payout scenarios before committing to a listing promotion.

Post-launch metrics showed a 12% decrease in listing abandonment during the checkout flow and a 9% lift in promoted listings purchased. Sellers reported higher trust in the marketplace, and the customer success team fielded fewer fee disputes.

This before/after illustrates the importance of timing in information disclosure and how financial clarity in transaction flows directly affects seller behavior and platform health.
