Before/After: Reworking Top Navigation for a SaaS Analytics Dashboard
Design · 5 min read
The original dashboard used a dense top nav with nested dropdowns containing 20+ items, which led to low discoverability of newly released features. User interviews revealed that customers relied on search or support rather than exploring the nav. The redesign aimed to balance discoverability with scalability while keeping the product familiar for power users.
Designers introduced a two-tier approach: a compact global nav with four primary product areas and an expandable “product launcher” for feature surfacing. They also added contextual shortcuts that changed depending on user intent and role. The engineering team implemented lazy loading for the launcher to avoid performance regressions.
Post-launch analytics showed a 22% increase in clicks on newly launched features and a 15% decrease in time-to-first-success for new users. The team documented the nav taxonomy as a living artifact to prevent future drift and set up quarterly nav audits tied to feature launches.
