Black Whale raises $30M to build cross-platform Horizon Arena with cloud saves

Indie studio Black Whale announced a $30 million Series A to develop Horizon Arena, a cross-platform arena title focused on fast matchmaking and persistent progression across devices. Investors cited the team’s experience shipping multiplayer titles and a monetization model built around cosmetic economies rather than pay-to-win mechanics.
A core technical goal is platform-agnostic cloud saves, allowing players to switch devices mid-session and rejoin instantly. Black Whale is also building a modular live-ops backend to deploy events and balance patches without interrupting active sessions.
Black Whale plans closed alpha tests later this year and will use a portion of the funds to expand server capacity in North America and APAC. The studio says it will keep a player-first approach to community moderation and anti-cheat measures.
