Canva adds 'Design Critic'—an AI coach that explains layout decisions
Design · 3 min read
Designers or casual users can invoke the Critic to receive a short analysis of alignment, visual hierarchy, color balance, and typographic rhythm. The Critic explains why an element might be drawing unintended attention and offers 2–3 concrete alternatives with previews.
Unlike purely generative tools, Canva's feature aims to teach design principles incrementally. It includes a 'why this works' sidebar with one-line explanations and links to short tutorials. Users can apply suggested fixes automatically or use them as starting points for manual refinement.
Small businesses praised the tool for reducing reliance on external designers for quick assets, while professional designers appreciated the quick rationale when mentoring non-design teammates. Canva says the feature will include brand-aware critiques for paid plans.
