Canva adds on-device generative models for offline and low-latency design

Canva's on-device models are optimized for small-footprint diffusion and transformer architectures, allowing core creative features—like background removal, template generation and quick moodboard creation—to run offline. The feature targets educators, NGO users and teams in regulated industries.

Offline generation includes a sync-to-cloud option that allows teams to push only finalized assets back to Canva's servers. Canva also introduced a local asset cache and model quarantine to prevent leaking of proprietary imagery in shared environments.

Designers praised the reduced latency and the ability to iterate without an always-on internet connection, while enterprise customers welcomed the privacy tradeoffs. Canva plans to expand on-device capabilities to cover more complex workflows later in the year.
