Canva updates: 'Smart Layouts' with on-device generative suggestions

Smart Layouts runs a small, efficient generative model in the browser or mobile app to propose layout variations based on current assets and a campaign brief. Because it can operate on-device, creators get instant suggestions without uploading sensitive brand materials to the cloud.

The feature includes brand-aware constraints so teams with uploaded brand kits receive only compliant variants. Designers can lock elements and request new suggestions that respect those locks, enabling rapid exploration with guardrails.

Canva highlighted performance and privacy benefits for enterprise customers and creators working with sensitive imagery. The company still offers cloud-backed generation for heavier tasks but recommended Smart Layouts for early-stage iteration.

Users praised faster iteration loops but some pro designers requested deeper typographic controls in local mode. Canva said it plans to expand the on-device model's capabilities in the coming months.
