Canvas Co-op announces OpenSpec, an open-source design system standard, with $3M seed to build tooling

OpenSpec defines a JSON-based schema for tokens, components, accessibility metadata, and interaction patterns that can be consumed by design tools and runtime SDKs. Canvas Co-op designed the spec to be extensible so organizations can map their existing design systems into the format and share components across teams.
The $3 million seed will support development of converters for major design tools, a community registry for reusable components, and compliance tooling to validate accessibility and design system rules. Canvas Co-op said the funding came from a consortium of design-led companies committed to open standards.
Early partners include mid-size SaaS companies that want to reduce duplicated effort across platform teams. Canvas Co-op plans to establish a governance council with cross-industry members to steward the standard and avoid vendor capture.
