Case Study: Streamlining Checkout for an AR Try-On Retail Startup
Design · 5 min read
The startup's AR try-on experience was best-in-class, but checkout required leaving the try-on canvas to a separate, dense form that broke immersion. Heatmaps showed users exiting at the point of context switch, and interviews revealed concerns about security when leaving the AR view. The challenge was to convert immersive engagement into smooth transactions.
Designers created a modal checkout overlay that preserved the AR canvas as a dimmed background, allowing shoppers to reference the product in-scene while completing purchase steps. Payment methods were simplified with a single-tap wallet and stored address suggestions. Trust signals were embedded as subtle microinteractions and receipts that appeared within the AR space after purchase to confirm success.
The result was an 18% decrease in cart abandonment and a higher Net Promoter Score for the checkout experience. Users reported feeling more confident purchasing because they could see the item in-context throughout. The study demonstrates that for immersive experiences, minimizing context switching and bringing trust cues into the same space can materially improve conversion.
