ClearPath raises $28M to commercialize explainable computer-vision for retail checkouts

ClearPath's system provides item detection, classification, and a trace log that explains which features contributed to each prediction. Retailers use the platform to power cashierless checkouts and to reduce shrink by improving POS reconciliation.

The funds will be used to expand camera support, develop privacy-preserving aggregation, and obtain retail certifications. ClearPath also released a dashboard that surfaces confidence intervals and counterfactuals to help store managers interpret suspicious predictions.

Pilot stores reported fewer manual interventions after model tuning using ClearPath's explainability tools. The startup highlights that traceable decisions make it easier to resolve disputes and meet regulatory transparency requirements.

ClearPath plans to integrate with existing POS systems and offer edge-processing options to reduce latency, while emphasizing data minimization and customer consent flows to maintain trust.
