This has led to an increase in contract-to-hire arrangements that offer a trial period followed by a permanent offer.

Designers choosing freelance paths cite autonomy and project variety as primary motivators. Firms say they prefer contract hires for speed and risk management but are increasingly converting top contractors to full-time to secure institutional knowledge.
