Demystifying Equity for Designers: How Much Is 'Enough' at Seed and Series B?
Design · 5 min read
Equity allocation for designers varies considerably by company stage. At seed stage, senior designers and early design leaders may receive between 0.5% and 2.0% depending on seniority and founding involvement; at Series A the range typically narrows to 0.1%–0.5%; by Series B and later, senior hires might see 0.02%–0.15% unless they're joining as early-exec hires. These are general ranges and depend heavily on negotiation and role impact.
Understanding dilution, vesting schedules, and option pool refresh mechanics is essential. Designers should model different exit scenarios (acquisition, IPO, down round) and work with simple calculators to estimate value after expected dilution. Key negotiation points include acceleration on change-of-control, clarity on option type (ISO vs NSO), and refresh cadence for long-term retention.
Hiring managers recommend requesting historical fundraising and dilution data if possible, and prioritizing full comp packages over isolated equity percentages. For many designers, a slightly lower equity slice paired with strong base, benefits, and a clear role trajectory can be preferable to a high but speculative equity grant.
