Design case study: Transforming a B2B analytics dashboard for non-technical managers
Design · 6 min read
InsightWorks originally built a dashboard optimized for analysts, with dense charts, SQL snippets, and heavy configurability. Non-technical managers found it intimidating and often relied on analysts to extract key takeaways. The product team reframed the problem: make the dashboard answer questions that managers ask in plain language and reduce the steps to operationalize insights.
The redesign used three principles: conversational information scent, progressive disclosure, and actionable recommendations. Designers replaced complex visualizations with a combination of simplified overview cards, natural-language insight summaries, and one-click actions to export or share findings. A guided onboarding tour uses the manager's real data to demonstrate common tasks. Visual hierarchy, color contrast, and iconography were revised to reduce cognitive load and highlight next steps.
After rolling out to a trial cohort, activation for manager roles increased 37%, average time-to-insight fell from 18 minutes to 6 minutes, and usage of self-serve reports rose 48%. Qualitative feedback praised the plain-language summaries and the ability to convert insights into action without involving analysts. The company plans to expand the conversational insight engine and add role-based defaults to further tailor the experience.
