Design Interviews Are Shortening — Here’s How Portfolios Need to Adapt
Design · 3 min read
Hiring teams are streamlining interviews to reduce time-to-hire, often condensing screenings and portfolio reviews into shorter sessions. This makes a clearly organized, outcome-focused portfolio more valuable than long case studies with extensive backstory.
Designers should lead with the problem, their specific contributions, and measurable outcomes. Include a short 1-2 minute elevator summary at the top of each case study and annotate artifacts to guide interviewers through decision points instead of relying on a long verbal walkthrough.
Candidates should also prepare a 'rapid critique' sample—three focused insights they can share in a 3–5 minute snippet—to showcase thinking under time pressure. Practice concise storytelling: hiring teams frequently prefer candidates who can communicate impact clearly and quickly.
