Design Managers Report Longer Tenures, But Career Ladders Need Work
Design · 4 min read
Companies that invested in explicit career frameworks in 2025 saw longer tenures for senior designers into 2026, with fewer lateral moves and more internal promotions. Designers credit clearer expectations, mentorship programs, and transparent paths to staff and principal levels.
However, industry research shows many organizations still stop at 'lead' or 'senior' without distinct competency outlines for principal, director, or design architect roles. The absence of these mid-to-senior frameworks creates friction during hiring—candidates either over- or undersell themselves relative to unclear job definitions.
HR and design leaders are responding by co-authoring role descriptors and adopting competency-based performance reviews. The effort reduces mismatches and helps recruiters write clearer job posts that attract the right experience band.
