Design Systems Add Neurodiversity Profiles to Component Libraries

Leading design systems are shipping profile-driven components that adjust parameters like animation speed, information density, and verbosity based on declared user preferences. Designers can create named profiles—such as 'low-motion, high-contrast, concise language'—and bind them to tokens so components adapt automatically at runtime.
The initiative grew out of pattern work done in 2025 and accelerated as accessibility research highlighted the diversity of user needs. Product managers appreciate that a profile-based approach reduces the need for separate feature toggles while still offering granular control. Engineers report that the approach simplifies testing: rather than validating dozens of combinations, teams verify a small set of curated profiles.
Adoption requires cultural change—teams must learn to design with multiple cognitive contexts in mind and create content strategies that support variable verbosity. But early projects report improved usability metrics among neurodivergent user groups and fewer support requests related to sensory overload.
