Design Systems for Neurodiversity: Patterns That Support Cognitive Accessibility

Cognitive accessibility is getting more attention in design system roadmaps. Instead of tacking on separate 'simple' themes, designers are creating modular, composable patterns that make it easy to provide simplified UIs: content density tokens, progressive disclosure components, explicit orientation helpers, and predictable animation rhythms that reduce distractions. These patterns are intended to be opt-in user preferences rather than separate products.
Key components include ‘focus funnels’ (UI funnels that reduce peripheral content during task flows), toggleable content condensation (e.g., expand/collapse for supplementary information), and explicit structuring tokens for headings and labels that assist skimmability. Design tokens for copy density and reading grade level help content teams maintain consistent cognitive load across products.
Designers also emphasize testing with representative users—people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and executive functioning differences—and using task-based metrics rather than only satisfaction scores. The work is pragmatic: add preferences to user settings, map them to token switches and component states, and make the controls discoverable and reversible. The payoff is higher overall usability and fewer support calls, because more users can tailor interfaces to how they process information best.
