Diversity Hiring Still Lags in Senior Design Roles Despite Entry-Level Gains
Design · 5 min read
Recruiters and DEI leads report that while hiring for junior roles has diversified in many organizations, promotion rates to senior and staff positions do not yet reflect those gains. Structural barriers include unclear promotion criteria and fewer sponsorship opportunities for underrepresented designers.
To address this, some companies are instituting promotion readiness programs, equity-focused bonus plans, and transparent career ladders that outline skills and outcomes required for each level. Compensation committees are also auditing pay bands to correct for historical disparities.
Designers and managers should track promotion metrics, mentorship access, and pay equity within teams. Hiring teams that invest in internal mobility and transparent leveling prove more successful at converting diverse junior hires into long-term senior talent.
