Entry-Level Designers Face Longer Hiring Funnels But Better Onboarding Packages
Design · 3 min read
Hiring managers say they are spending more time vetting junior hires due to the higher business risk of poor early outcomes. As a result, hiring funnels have lengthened, with more stages and project-based assessments designed to evaluate problem-solving and collaboration.
To offset this, many employers now include multi-month onboarding programs with dedicated mentors, cohort training, and clear learning milestones. These packages often include defined rotation opportunities within product teams to speed skill acquisition and retention.
For junior designers, the recommendation is to weigh onboarding quality and mentorship as heavily as salary. Early-career learning pathways often determine long-term trajectory more than initial base pay.
