Epic Games and accessibility NGOs co-author Gaming UI Token Standard for cross-studio consistency

The Gaming UI Token Standard defines tokens like "hud-emphasis", "dialog-modal-focus", and "controller-navigation-gap", along with expected runtime behaviors for each platform and input method. By standardizing these tokens, developers can reuse accessibility behaviors across projects and ensure that settings like "text size" or "high-contrast HUD" apply consistently.

The project includes reference implementations for Unreal Engine and Unity, plus a set of accessibility QA scenarios that can be run in automated playtests. For example, a "focus drift" test simulates rapid camera movement to ensure HUD elements remain readable and that focus order stays intact when using a controller or keyboard.

Accessibility groups praised the move as a long-overdue alignment between games and application UX, noting it lowers the barrier for smaller studios to ship accessible experiences. Epic says the standard will be open for community feedback and plans to work with platform holders to map tokens to console-level accessibility toggles.
