Epic Games partners with DeepMotion to offer AI-driven animation retargeting in Unreal
Gaming · 5 min read
Epic and DeepMotion's new integration brings advanced motion retargeting into Unreal, where an AI model maps animations from one skeleton to another while preserving stylistic intent and physical plausibility. This reduces the manual cleanup typically required when adapting animations between rigs with different proportions.
The feature includes a visual retarget editor inside Unreal that shows confidence heatmaps and suggested corrective tweaks. Animation teams can batch-process libraries and validate retargeted assets in play mode with performance profiling to ensure real-time viability.
Epic is positioning this as a boon for indie studios and large teams alike: small teams benefit from lower barriers to high-quality motion, while larger teams can streamline animation pipelines and focus artists on higher-level motion direction rather than repetitive retargeting tasks.
