EU Proposes Mandatory Accessibility APIs for Smart Home Design Systems
Tech · 6 min read
Under the proposal, manufacturers of smart home hubs, speakers, thermostats, and lighting systems would be required to implement a baseline accessibility API exposing device states, semantic intents, and input abstractions. The goal is to let assistive apps and voice agents query and control devices in a predictable, standardized way across brands.
The regulation builds on prior EU digital accessibility directives and includes conformance testing and certification to reduce vendor lock-in. It also mandates accessible onboarding flows for devices, including tactile and audio modes for setup. Industry groups welcomed the clarity but warned about implementation timelines and the burden on smaller manufacturers.
Accessibility advocates said the proposal could be transformative for people with disabilities, enabling interoperable assistive dashboards and third-party automation tailored to individual needs. The draft now moves to consultation, and member states are expected to weigh in over the next quarter before formal adoption discussions begin.
