Figma 2026 Summer: generative vector layers and local MPS models

Figma's 2026 Summer release centers on two headline features: generative vector layers that maintain editability and an on-device model runtime for macOS that runs inference via MPS. Designers can now produce AI-generated assets that remain vectors instead of flattened bitmaps, preserving points, strokes and layer effects for downstream edits.

The local model option uses smaller, optimized diffusion and transformer models to allow teams to run generation without cloud round trips. Figma says this reduces latency and improves privacy for client and user data; larger multisession tasks remain available through Figma's cloud models for teams that need them.

Other updates include smarter auto-variants, where Figma proposes responsive variants based on a single input frame, and a new audit panel that surfaces where generative layers deviate from system tokens. Plugin authors get new extension points for calling Figma's local runtime securely within the editor.
